In My Words

Documentary (2024; followed by shorter version in 2025)

Director: Viktor Witkowski

Winner: Best Feature Documentary, New York Independent Art Film Festival

In My Words (Our Borderlands) is an intimate documentary following the director's grandmother, Janina, who lives with her eldest daughter Dana in a small village nestled among the mountains and forests of southwestern Poland. As the director says: “Both women embody the shared Polish-German history of the region and the violent traumas it carries. In conversations with them and illustrated through a blend of documentary footage and imaginary visuals, Janina and Dana reflect on resilience, personal sacrifice and the challenges of rural life.”

For the soundtrack, Julia drew inspiration from the traditional Polish folk song "Był sobie król," which melody was fragmentarily used for part of the soundtrack. Julia based her score on string writing, folk influences, and eerie textures adding a slightly surreal element to the documentary.

The film was recognised internationally, receiving the Best Feature Documentary award at the New York Independent Art Film Festival.
